Corey Brown
Balance of Power's vocalist - the newest member in the ranks - hails from Colorado, USA. Corey's page takes the form of the Q+A format. Here's how he responds.
What are your main influences?
“Queensryche, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Journey, Kansas, Triumph.”
What is your all-time favourite album?
“Operation Mindcrime by Queensryche.”
What equipment do you use?
“Throat, Sure Beta-58, Korg, Yamaha, Washburn.”
Where were you born?
“Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA”
What inspired you to become a musician, besides vocal ability do you play musical instruments?
“I have been around music all of my life, having an older brother who plays guitar
and sings as well, played as a heavy influence in my music interest. I actually
started off site reading sheet music with the drums through junior and high
school playing and lettering in concert and jazz band. I did the Don Henley
thing and played the drums and sang. While in my first real band I remember
auditioning singer after singer with no success, we decided to audition drummers
and put me out in front. My first show out in front of the drums was at a
'hole in the wall' nightclub back in 1986. I took center stage and never looked
back.
I
was mesmerized by Queensryche front man Geoff Tate when I heard 'Take Hold
of the Flame' way back in 1983 and I remember saying to my friend at the
time, I want to sing like that! I have studied many books, audio training
courses and simply worked very hard to perfect my voice through tons of hours
of trial and error, much error in the beginning! Special thanks to Jim Gillette
of Nitro fame, your tapes actually worked! Yeah.... go ahead and laugh while
you read this and when you are done laughing let's hear how well you can sing,
jackass! As far as hidden talents in addition to drums, I play guitar and
keyboards just well enough to express song ideas and annoy people around me.”
