Firefest II

Corey on stageI'm not really that familiar with Balance Of Power but suffice to say that their collective experience in the biz was obvious. I believe that this was only the second performance with new singer Corey Brown, but they all looked utterly at ease on the stage. The band cruised their time slot, with a majestic swagger, blending expansive, orchestral keyboards and lightning guitar. Covering three albums “Heathen Machine”, “Perfect Balance” and “Ten More Tales Of Grand Illusion” the band chose well with a blend of Rock and Melody. “Shelter Me” and “Daybreaker" standing out as person al highlights. Vocally spot on, this was quality stuff, I am listening to the (recently purchased) CD “Perfect Balance” and quickly becoming a fan. Having taken the Firefest baton from Power Quest, the band lifted an ever increasing crowd and, as a result, I for one am keen to know more, which is the whole point really.

Pete on stageBalance Of Power have been around for nearly ten years and have released several classy albums. Tonight, however - in my opinion - they picked the wrong set and should have dropped the heavier, Heathen Machine, material. Older material such as "Blindman", "Daybreaker" and "Searching For The Truth" saw the band in full flight. New vocalist, Corey, gave a performance that left you in no doubt that he is the best person to ever front this band. Pete Southern and Lionel Hicks are also superb performers and deserve more credit than they get.

Bloodstock 2004

Stage setting at BloodstockAs I said in my previous review Balance Of Power suffered with an apparent rush for food. I do know this was the case as I'd left the venue in a tide of people after Evergrey, but had wolfed my sandwich down to get back in time for opener Heathen Machine. There was an imbalance of a non-chemical type during Chemical Imbalance when vocalist Jon K nearly fell into the crowd off a monitor much to his shock and great amusement. Wake Up Call was a particular high point of the set with Jon K's vocals registering so high it was a good job my pint glass was made of plastic. Pete Southern's guitar playing was meanwhile impressive again and he got on with his job leaving Jon K the full run of the stage.

Stage setting at BloodstockVarying slightly from the set list of that gig we additionally got Ten More Tales Of Grand Illusion and Walking On Top Of The World, though unfortunately there was no time left for Sins Of The World. Like their set supporting Threshold two nights earlier Balance Of Power were incredibly tight and in my opinion they are one of the most overlooked bands our country has.

Camden Underworld

For Balance of Power, this was a warm up for the weekends Bloodstock festival, where I was already looking forward to seeing them again only half way through second song Chemical Imbalance. Balance Of Power have a knack of writing heavy songs but not at the expense of melody. This was none more ably demonstrated by Shelter Me with its huge chorus. Full marks to the band for clearly having thoroughly rehearsed their back up vocals.

Wake Up Call took the pace back up a few notches, with Pete Southern teasing squeals from his guitar. With such a heavy guitar sound on CD, I was wondering whether the band would suffer from only having one guitar but this was not the case and Southern's playing was impressive throughout.

Of course vocalist Jon K is relatively new to the band but any concerns of how he would handle the older material were soon forgotten. Vocalists with a range of Geoff Tate's don't grow on trees but Jon K has that range and I look forward to seeing him with his other band Biomechanical in this same venue in a couple of weeks time. Of course to muster such power, a tight rhythm section is essential and Tony Ritchie and Lionel Hicks are certainly that. Ritchie in particular is in the crowds face throughout and really exuded passion into the likes of Searching For The Truth.

A short but definitely sweet set, now if only they'd play more live dates.

Heathen Machine

Heathen Machine cover art (thumbnail) A darker peice of work; plenty of bite, deeper perspectives, lots of passion, all layered with rich, hooky melodies.
